1968/03/12 Southampton Evening Echo:

Link with old Soton is severed

A link with the Southampton
of times past was severed with
the death of Mr. Percy John Aslatt
at his home at Rownhams.
He was the last surviving son of
Francis Aslatt, whose family and
forbears were well-known in
Southampton business circles,
himself an inventor and manufac-
turer. The family used to own
land in the centre of the town,
West Marlands, and "Aslatt's Cut"
was named after them.
They used to manufacture horse-
drawn coaches, and has a Royal
Warrant during the reign of
Queen Victoria.
Percy was one of the early
Volunteers, in August 1914. He
joined the Royal Army Medical
Corps, and served throughout the
war in Flanders.
For his work and service among
French civilians he was awarded
the Military Medal, and was
decorated with the Croix de
Guerre with Star in July 1917.
His sister, Mrs Marion Ashby,
has two issues of the "Southamp-
ton and District Pictorial", one
dated January 9, 1918 showing a
picture of Percy after the decora-
tion; the other dated December
12, 1918, with a picture of Percy
and his brother, Harold, who had
emigrated to Australia and re-
turned with the Anzacs, and who
was himself decorated. Also in the
group is their father , and the
caption says the sons were grand-
nephews of the late Alderman
Aslatt of Southampton.

In those days ...

This engraving of
Victorian Southamp-
ton bears the title, "Above Bar
Southampton and Aslatt's Coach
Manufactory". The name Aslatt
and the family's close ties with
the city are recalled by the
death at Rownhams the other
day of Mr. Percy J. Aslatt, the
last surviving son of Francis
Aslatt.
The family owned land in the
centre of the town, near West
Marlands, on which the Civic
Centre was built, and "Aslatt's
Cut", which linked Above Bar
and the Marlands, got its name
from the family.
Both the Cut and Aslatt's
coach workshop, where horse-
drawn coaches were built, have
long since disappeared.
Just in case you have not
recognised it, the engraving
shows the spot where Southamp-
ton's busiest crossroad stands
- the junction of Above Bar
with Civic Centre-road and New-
road. In those quieter Victorian
days, New-road did not exist
and a cut led off Above Bar to
the Marlands by the side of
Aslatt's - now the Co-operative
and Lloyd's Bank corner. Parents: Francis (Frank) Aslatt and Emily Laura (?).
