"Southampton Nov 6th 1840

My Dear Sister,
I am quite ashamed that I have not written to you sooner. I have been very
bussy (sic) in endeavouring to get settled. I now begin to get very
comfortable and my health (is) very well as can be expected. I have enjoyed a
heavenly summer for Health, which I hope in time to weigh over the great
expence (sic) illness me into; Our House is very convenient, stands very
pleasant and healthy, our field looks so nice and Green since the rain. I owe
great thanks in London for my recovery. I have lost all that weakness at
stomack (sic) and can rest well at night; I hope and trust you are all well
and the noble Sir James Clark, I have attended to his kind advice as much as
possible, I have received wonderfull benefit and so has Aslatt, we have not
had a sick bed since; Southampton has been very full all the Summer, and still
continues so, I thought to have had the pleasure of seeing you down this
Summer, I should much like to hear how Harriet and Richard are, Mrs and Mrs
Lowndes and Davies are. I have not seen any of our people from Moat House for
some time. When I did hear Jane was very poorly - the winter will try her I
fear; I have sent a lock of Marria's and baby's hair which is near of a
colour. The two fairest of the flock, I should like you to make choice of it
for yourself, as you may depend she was very valuable. I have heard an
amiable character from people that have been with her - I hope that she is
gone to rest and every one else that departeth this life - I have heard from
John at Cheltenham, he has six children to provide for I have heard he has a
very good business but his health not so good. I hope and trust Our Sovereign
Lady will have a good a time as I had with my first only to keep my Doctors
hours and then I was quite safe in bed, I shall hope to hear a good account of
your health and likewise your Lady and Mistress.
This leaves us all well at (Southampton?); I shall hope to hear they are
better at Moat House on Monday Mrs Dannells in (sic) coming in to spend the
day, pray accept my kind love and believe me to remain your ever affectionate
Sister -
Hester Martha Aslatt"

Notes:

Queen Victoria's diary (1836/02/16) refers to the arrival of Baroness Lehzen's
new maid, Charlotte Colson. Charlotte was still at Buckingham Palace in 1841.

Queen Victoria's diaries note that a 'Percy Colson' wrote an amusing account
of Prince Albert, which was 'very wicked, but completely true'. This must
have happened during Albert's lifetime. Could this have been another Colson at
Court? The Royal Archives have been unable to locate this reference.

Sir James Clark (1788-1870) Scottish Physician, born at Cullen, took his M.A.
at Aberdeen, studied medicine at Edinburgh and London, was a naval surgeon
1809-1815, practised eight years at Rome, and in 1826 settled in London. In
1837, Clark, who had been physician to the Duchess of Kent, was appointed
physician-in-ordinary to Queen Victoria.

Queen Victoria (1819-1901) ascended the throne on June 20th, 1837. She married
Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha on February 10th 1840, and her first
child, Victoria the Princess Royal was born 3 weeks early on 21st November
1840. Albert Edward, later Edward VII, was born November 9th 1841.
